What Is My Car Worth? How Car Values Work in Switzerland

There is no single price for a used car. What your car is worth depends on its model, age, mileage and condition – and on who is buying. This guide explains what drives the value of a car in Switzerland, why a private price and a dealer price are different, and how to get a realistic figure.

What determines your car's value

FactorWhy it matters
Make, model and versionSome models hold their value far better than others. Engine, fuel type and four-wheel drive also play a role – 4x4 is popular in Switzerland.
Age and mileageThe two biggest factors. A car with high mileage for its age is worth less than a similar car with low mileage.
ConditionBodywork, interior, tyres and the technical condition. Damage and wear lower the value.
Service historyA complete, documented service history shows the car has been looked after.
EquipmentNavigation, driver assistance, leather, a towbar or a second set of wheels can add value.
MFK statusA recently passed inspection helps; an overdue one lowers the price. See our MFK guide.
DemandPopular models, colours and drivetrains sell faster. Some cars are seasonal – convertibles sell better in spring.

Private price vs dealer price

When people talk about a car's value, they often mean two different numbers:

  • The private price is what a private buyer might pay on an online marketplace. It is usually the higher figure – but you have to find the buyer, handle viewings and test drives, and take on the risk of claims after the sale.
  • The dealer price is what a garage or car buyer offers. It is lower because the buyer takes on the work and the risk: preparing the car, giving a warranty, the time until it is resold, and their margin.

Neither number is "wrong". The question is how much the speed and certainty of a dealer sale are worth to you. Our guide to private sale vs garage vs car buyer compares the options.

How to find out what your car is worth

  1. Look at similar cars for saleSearch online marketplaces for the same model, year and mileage. Remember that advertised prices are asking prices – cars often sell for less.
  2. Use a valuation serviceServices such as Eurotax give an estimate based on the car's data. The TCS offers Eurotax valuations online for a small fee. Online estimates cannot see the car's actual condition.
  3. Get a real offerA concrete offer from a buyer tells you what you can actually get. Our free valuation takes 2 minutes and you receive an offer within 24 hours, with no obligation to sell.

How to get a better price

  • Clean the car inside and out – first impressions count, even with professional buyers.
  • Gather the service book, invoices and the latest MFK report.
  • Have all keys ready, including the spare key.
  • Include the second set of wheels or tyres if you have one.
  • Be honest about damage and defects: surprises at the inspection lower the price more than an honest description.
  • Don't wait too long: cars lose value every month, and the next MFK or service may be due soon.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How can I find out what my car is worth for free?

Compare similar cars on online marketplaces and request a free offer from a car buyer. Our valuation takes 2 minutes and you receive an offer within 24 hours, with no obligation to sell.

Why is a dealer's offer lower than prices on online marketplaces?

Advertised prices are asking prices from private sellers. A dealer also has to prepare the car, give a warranty, wait until it is resold and cover costs and margin. In return, you sell quickly and without risk.

What is Eurotax?

Eurotax is a widely used valuation service in Switzerland that estimates a car's value from its data. The TCS offers Eurotax valuations online for a small fee. Like any online estimate, it cannot see the car's actual condition.

Does mileage or age matter more?

Both matter, and together. A car with high mileage for its age is worth less than a similar car with average mileage. Condition and service history can make a big difference too.

Is the online offer the final price?

Our online offer is based on the details you give us. The final price is confirmed after the free inspection, once we have seen the car's actual condition.
